The Licensed Practical Nurse has played an important role in healthcare system in the province of Alberta since the shortage of nurses during the world war. During that period, the School for Nursing Aides was established by the Department of Veterans’ Affairs and Canadian Vocational Training. The Alberta provincial government passed the “Nursing Aid Act” in 1947 with the acceptance of civilians as trainees and providing the licensing of the Certified Nursing Aide. The LPN nursing profession started out in the form of Certified Nurses Aide.
