The Popularity of Leonardo da Vinci’s "Mona Lisa"
Leonardo da Vinci’s painting Mona Lisa from the beginning of the 16th century may be the most famous artwork in history, better known than even Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony. Mona’s little smile is the world’s most famous smile, and everyone knows it. And it is probably true to the fame of the painting is a sort of self-fulfilling prophesy. Yes it is a great painting (and I have nothing but respect for the artist and the curators who have preserved this artwork). But it should also be said that many people are in love with the idea of being excited about an artwork. It makes us feel smart to be interested in it.
Hopefully that final sentence above does not sound cynical, because that is not my...

.....ana, “Mona Lisa has been separated from her Renaissance context and cultural setting and removed from her elevated status originally associated with high culture” (86). And she is today a beacon of high art in the Information Age. We need the Mona Lisa now more than ever, because without her we feel as though the art world (locked away somewhere) has become just too far away from us. We need to know we can recognize high cultural things, and that we can become experts about them if we ever find the time to become art experts.
