The business model of early Hollywood cinema was fairly straightforward. Studios made films and people paid money to see them. A big box office generated profits and more films got made. Over the next 100 years, additional elements such as public relations (e.g. The Oscars), product placement, and merchandising complicated the metrics of success but the core purpose of a large paying viewership remained. American hegemony assured the unique position of Hollywood. Its films could thrive worldwide without any government direction or support. In contrast, other national cinemas have developed more symbiotic relationships with their state sponsors as well as related business interests....
