The Nature of Mimesis in Chinese Painting – Ching Hao Introduction This paper addresses mimesis in ancient Chinese art as was determined by the very old concept of the structure of the universe and how it interacted with human beings. In Chinese cosmology, there was no division between real and ideal worlds, and humans and heaven that involved a certain oneness in the concept of tianrenheyi. (Weber 193-196; Wang 2007) The world had a natural unity even as things fell into different classes and classifications, linked by their ch’i or ‘matter-energy’ as that which an accomplished painter was to be able to evoke.
