The College Classroom as Cultural Space Nahari, Esquivel, and Lopez (164) argue that “the classroom can be seen as a cultural space that encompasses the histories of those who live in it; as such as it is subject to negotiation among all who dwell there.” The dimensions of cultural space in an undergraduate college classroom include language, ethnicity, socioeconomic factors, and individual expectations and affiliations, all of which will vary from student to student. This paper will discuss some of these cultural dimensions, assess the challenges and opportunities they pose for pedagogy, and argue that the undergraduate classroom should be, to the extent possible, a culturally sheltered space.
