From gunfighters in the Wild West through the Marlboro Man, cigarettes have been a visible feature in the American landscape for quite a while. “Smoking—once a socially accepted behavior—is the leading preventable cause of death and disability in the United States” ("Tobacco Use-United States, 1900-1999” 2202). The ancient shamanic herb of tobacco from South America, which was originally used by the natives in that region for medicinal and spiritual purposes, has now become a reviled plant which many would love to completely eradicate from the face of the earth.
