The Cause and Effect of Childhood Obesity The seriousness of childhood obesity can be seen in that approximately 16 percent of children, 2 to 19 years old, are overweight (Bellows and Roach). The problem with childhood obesity is that it has both short-term and long-term effects on the child and later these effects can continue to affect the child as an adult.
