Proponents of what has come to be called “the 100 Mile Diet” propose that by eating locally grown foods society can save both money and reduce pollution. They claim that the transport of foods over thousands of miles by rail and truck to processing plants, to markets and then to consumers is costly and environmentally harmful. Opponents see market forces as better determinants of the most efficient methods of food production. They see the 100 Mile Diet as a feel-good idea that will do little to solve most of the world’s food or pollution problems.
