In human beings speech is produced when airflow is regulated through the mouth, nose and throat. Based on findings from research done in the early 20th century, Guthrie (1938) described the vocal mechanism as being composed of respiration, phonation and articulation which is associated with resonance. According to Guthrie (1938) two resonators of phonation are the mouth and the pharynx without which the laryngeal note is weak and indefinite. The parts of our body that modify the air to produce speech are called the articulators. The vocal articulators in the oral cavity include the lips, the tongue and the soft palate.
