During the course of the Iraq War and US occupation, the role of private contractors reached unprecedented levels. In 2008, in fact, the number of people employed in Iraq by US contractors reached 180,000 (Risen, 2008). Although privateers have played instrumental roles in warfare and military engagements throughout American history, the use of so many private contractors is creating many problems, including putting American soldiers in harm’s way. From an administrative point of view, this is a dangerous and unacceptable trend, and the time has come to face the facts concerning much needed changes in policy – namely, significant reductions in the use of private...
