The separation of church and state is a value long held in United States government. However, as the court case Selman v. Cobb County demonstrates, this is a contentious issue and one not easily resolved. An examination of Selman v. Cobb County demonstrates the varying points of view on creationism and evolution in the classroom, and reveals the deeply held convictions of American citizens along with the privileges that are awarded to all Americans.
Selman v. Cobb County originates with the school district’s decision to include the following disclaimer inside science textbooks:
This textbook contains material on evolution.
Evolution is a theory, not a fact, regarding the
origin of living...
The end:
.....amental nature of life, such as who we are, our purpose in life, how to live our lives, and how we interact with other life on our planet.
A Cobb County teacher suggested that an American flag be glued over the top of every sticker that was placed by the school board (Miller 2005). This, perhaps, is the best solution because though we all identify with different religions, in the end, we are all united as Americans.
