Caregivers are expected to be vigilant in protecting patient privacy information. The nurse in this case breached the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 ( HIPPA) Privacy Rule for protected health information. According to the U.S Government Printing Office (2011) a breach occurs when the gaining, access, use or disclosure of protected health information jeopardizes the security and confidentiality of the protected health information.
