Schizophrenia Incidence and Prevalence Schizophrenia is a chronic psychiatric disorder that has its onset in late adolescence or early adulthood and is characterized by psychosis, delusions, disorganized thoughts and behavior. Symptoms of schizophrenia include positive symptoms such as hallucinations, delusions, disorganized speech and behavior and negative symptoms such as social withdrawal, a flat affect, avolition and poverty of speech (Gerstein, 2010).
