On-Reserve Schools: Weak Link or Neglected Opportunity? Introduction In 1996, in the 20 to 24 year old group of First Nations people living on reserves, 60% had not completed high school. In 2006, the percentage was exactly the same – six out of ten had not graduated from high school or obtained alternative education at this level (Mendelson 1). The average First Nations student in an on-reserve school is at least two years behind his or her age group as a whole ("Aboriginals"). This indicates that not only is the situation very serious, it is not improving as time passes either. Clearly, there is something wrong with the educational opportunities available to First Nations peoples in Canada. The consequences are serious both for First...The end:
