Introduction
Volcanoes are some of the most destructive natural disasters. Volcanoes have been blamed for a large number of human deaths throughout human history. It has been determined since 1700 there were 27 eruptions that resulted in at least 1 000 deaths. This works out to at least a quarter million deaths because of volcanic eruption since 1700 (Bardinzeff and McBirney, 2000, p.225).
Volcanoes are specifically problematic because of secondary risks. Secondary risks are other risks to human life triggered by the volcanic eruption itself. These risks can include mudflows, fire, famine and possibly even floods (Bardinzeff and McBirney, 2000, p.227). Therefore, the deaths because of volcanic eruption might be significantly...
