Impacts of the Charter of Rights on Canadian Law Introduction The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms (hereafter merely the Charter of Rights) has had a profound impact on Canadian law since its entrenchment in the Canadian Constitution in 1982. This paper examines three specific impacts of the Charter of Rights on Canadian law: (1) The creation of a legal ecosystem friendlier to individual rights and freedoms; (2) the articulation and grounding of steadily liberalizing Canadian national values in an enforceable body of law; and (3) the widening of legal review in accordance with points (1) and (2).
