Workplace diversity, as defined in the textbook, refers to the primary and secondary human characteristics that influence the values of employees, their perceptions of themselves and of others, and their behaviours and interpretations of events. The primary, or core, dimensions of diversity include such characteristics as ethnicity, age, culture, gender, race, religion, sexual orientation and ability. There are also secondary dimensions, such as language, class, and education, which can impact employees’ values and behaviours (Schwind et al. 512-513).
