Foreign direct investment (FDI) is a vitally important part of the globalized economic system. FDI is defined as any form of investment that earns returns in enterprises that operate outside of the domestic territory of the investor. Specifically, FDI occurs when a firm in one country makes an investment in physical assets in another foreign country.
