Forced Marriages Are Wrong Arranged marriages have existed through history and continue to exist today in many countries, including Africa, Asia, and the Middle East. Many people believe that arranged marriages should be discontinued and that they should be replaced with marriages based on love. Some planned type of arranged marriages where the parents make the arrangements and where a young girl or woman has no say at all is called a forced marriage. The Forced Marriage unit in 2005 became aware that many forced marriages happen in the Middle Eastern countries and even debated making it a criminal offense but decided it would drive it further underground (Payne 28).
