Dolce and Vasari on Venetian Art, Imitation and Beauty Introduction Giorgio Vasari, in his Live of the Artists, and Lodovico Dolce, in his Aretino, both explore the practice, and the underlying theoretical approaches, of Renaissance art with reference to a range of prominent artists and their work. This essay will critically compare and contrast these writers’ views on Venetian painting. The thesis will be argued that while Dolce’s Aretino is modelled on Vasari’s Lives both formally and theoretically, in his discussion of Venetian art Dolce was attempting to define a Venetian artistic tradition much as Vasari defined a Tuscan artistic tradition.
