Introduction
The RNAO (2003) recommends that nurses endorse and implement the Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative or BFHI. The BFHI is a worldwide program that was begun by the World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF. This is the very first recommendation of the RNAO best practice guideline. Every other recommendation depends on it being implemented. I work on a labour and delivery unit where I believe we should implement the BFHI. The problem is that nurses do not know the best practice guidelines. Also, they are not convinced about exclusive breastfeeding. I will discuss the benefits and challenges of the BFHI and the best way to implement it. The BFHI is totally concerned with the mother’s and infant’s health.
