There are numerous problems with this parent’s current medication regimen and health. To begin with, by his own admission, the patient is taking 4g of acetaminophen daily, and drinks alcohol occasionally. Olson (2004) points out that, for acetaminophen, “chronic toxicity has been reported after daily consumption of supratherapeutic doses (more than 4-6g/day) by alcoholic patients” (p. 66). Thus, the patient’s acetaminophen dose is very close to the chronic toxicity cutoff, given the alcohol risk factor and potential under-reporting of the dose.
