Written examinations should not be exchanged or replaced with other alternatives of assessments because these provide teachers with unique insight into a student’s academic achievement. The written examination offers students the opportunity to develop and apply critical thought in a venue not compatible with standardized tests or other instruments which quantify student performance. This thesis paper will develop the argument that written examinations are a valuable tool for teachers and students alike, especially as standardized testing has supplanted the written examination in many forms of student assessment.
