A Conscious Struggle in "Coming of Age" COMING OF AGE In Frida, the protagonist’s coming of age happens early, with the bus accident. Vincent & Theo the transition to adulthood never really happens because Vincent instead slides gradually into madness while developing his talent. This provides an interesting contrast from the usual narrative arc where a character’s coming of age is a conscious struggle. These films make clear that the narrative arc of an artist’s life story is likely to have a unique trajectory. A more standard sort of person as a character is likely to try and find a way outside the shackles of home life or society. That character will find a way of doing so while remaining whole, or perhaps even become whole....The end:
.....cumstances, their gazes of defiance were critical in these films for explicating how their personal path away from expectations would be executed. Vincent’s way would be mute, brutal and crazy.
